Count Domenico Agusta founded MV Agusta (Italian pronunciation: [mme vu a.gu.sta], full name: MV AGUSTA Motor S.p.A., original name: Meccanica Verghera Agusta or MV) on 19 January 1945 as one of the branches of the Agusta aircraft company near Milan in Cascina Costa, Italy.  The abbreviation MV stands for Meccanica Verghera, the hamlet where the first MVs were manufactured. The modern headquarters and main production facilities are located on the shores of Lake Varese in Varese, Italy.

Early in the 20th century, four years after the Wright brothers made aviation history in the US, Count Giovanni Agusta traveled from Sicily to northern Italy and began construction on his first aircraft, the AG.1. The count took prompt action after the First World War, which showed the potential of aviation. In the town of Samarate, he established the Costruzioni Aeronautiche Giovanni Agusta S.A. (often abbreviated to Agusta) aircraft factory in 1923. He left his life’s work to his wife Giuseppina and sons Domenico, Vincenzo, Mario, and Corrado when he passed away in 1927 at the age of 48.
